Don’t know if you need cataract surgery? Read these seven signs!
What is the Light Adjustable Lens?
The Light Adjustable Lens is an advanced intraocular lens (IOL) implanted during cataract surgery. Unlike traditional IOLs, the LAL can be adjusted after surgery to fine-tune your vision. This means that if your vision isn’t perfect immediately after surgery, it can be further refined to achieve optimal results.

Why Choose Light Adjustable Lenses?
- Personalized Vision: Everyone’s eyes are different, and the LAL cataracts treatment allows for customized vision correction tailored to your specific needs.
- Reduced Dependence on Glasses: The LAL can greatly lower or eliminate your need for glasses or contacts after cataract surgery.
- Unique Adjustability: The LAL can be adjusted immediately after surgery, and then permanently locked in for your best vision.
How Do Light Adjustable Lenses Work?
- In the weeks following your surgery, you and your dedicated Griffey ophthalmologist will work together to optimize your vision using UV light treatments.
- During this period, you’ll need to wear UV-blocking glasses provided by your eye care doctor. These glasses protect your eyes from exposure to other sources of indoor and outdoor UV light, which can cause uncontrolled changes to the Light Adjustable Lens.
- The UV protective glasses must be worn during all waking hours from the time of lens implantation until 24 hours after your last light treatment is completed. Once your vision is optimized and “locked in,” you can remove the UV protective glasses and enjoy your custom vision!

Am I a Candidate for Light Adjustable Lenses?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the Light Adjustable Lens and Light Delivery Device for patients with preexisting astigmatism of 0.75 diopters or more who are getting cataract surgery. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals who:
- Have had previous refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK)
- Desire the greatest possible freedom from glasses or contacts
- Have specific vision goals for different activities (e.g., reading, driving)
The best way to determine if the LAL is right for you is to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced ophthalmologists at Griffey Eye Care.
The Light Adjustable Lens Success Rate
The LAL has demonstrated impressive results. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery found that 92% of patients who chose this lens ended up achieving their target vision, lowering or eliminating their need for glasses or contacts afterward.
